How to play
How to play Rummy
Rummy is a game of matching and timing. Draw a card, build sets and runs, lay cards off, and discard to pass the turn — first to empty your hand wins.
- 1
Read the deal
Two players get 10 cards each; three or four players get 7 cards each. The rest of the deck becomes the face-down stock, with one card turned face up beside it to start the discard pile. Everyone else keeps their hand hidden — you only ever see your own cards and what is melded on the table.
- 2
Build sets and runs
A meld is either a set — three or four cards of the same rank, one of each suit — or a run of three or more consecutive cards in a single suit. Aces are always low (A-2-3 is valid, Q-K-A is not) and runs do not wrap around.
- 3
Draw, then act
On your turn, draw one card from the stock or take the top card of the discard pile. Then lay down any melds your hand supports, and lay single cards off onto melds already on the table — yours or an opponent's.
- 4
Discard to finish, or go out
End your turn by discarding one card. If that discard empties your hand, you go out and win the round on the spot. Score is settled against the deadwood — Aces, numbers, and face cards at 10 — left in every other hand.
Tips to win more rounds
- Take the discard pile only when it completes or extends a meld right away — otherwise draw blind from the stock so opponents cannot read your hand from your pickups.
- Meld as soon as a group is ready; cards sitting in your hand only count against you if you get stuck holding them.
- Lay off onto opponents' melds whenever you legally can — it thins your hand without waiting for your own sets to fill out.
- Hold cards that connect to two possible melds (a middle card of a near-run that also pairs a rank) longer than isolated high cards.
- Discard your highest-value dead cards first — a lone King or Queen costs you the most if an opponent goes out before you use it.
- Watch what opponents take from the discard pile; it tells you which ranks and suits they are collecting so you can avoid feeding them.
- Use auto-meld the instant you draw to sweep up anything obvious, then think about what to discard from what remains.
FAQ
Rummy, answered
Straight answers about the free Rummy card game you can play online in your browser.
What is Rummy?
Rummy is a classic matching card game played with one standard 52-card deck. Players take turns drawing and discarding while trying to build melds — sets of matching ranks or runs of consecutive same-suit cards — and lay off single cards onto melds on the table. The first player to empty their hand wins the round.
How do you play Rummy?
Deal 10 cards each for two players or 7 cards each for three or four, with the rest as a face-down stock and one card turned up to start the discard pile. On your turn, draw one card from the stock or the discard pile, lay down any sets (three or four of a rank) or runs (three or more consecutive cards in a suit) your hand supports, lay single cards off onto any meld on the table, then discard one card to end your turn. Emptying your hand — by discarding your last card or by melding it all away — wins the round.
Is Rummy free to play online?
Yes. rummycardgame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.
What counts as a meld in Rummy?
Two kinds of melds are legal: a set of three or four cards sharing a rank but in different suits (for example 7♠ 7♥ 7♦), and a run of three or more cards of the same suit in unbroken rank order (for example 4♦ 5♦ 6♦). Aces are always low, so Ace-2-3 is a valid run but Queen-King-Ace is not.
How does scoring work?
Melding a new group is worth 2 points per card and laying a single card off is worth 3, so your score climbs during play. Going out adds a 25-point bonus plus the deadwood in every remaining opponent hand — Aces count 1, number cards their face value, and Jacks, Queens, and Kings count 10 each.
What happens if the stock runs out?
The discard pile (all but its top card) is automatically reshuffled into a fresh stock, so play continues. On the rare occasion there is truly nothing left to reshuffle and nobody has gone out, the round ends in a stalemate with no winner.
Should I draw from the stock or the discard pile?
Take the discard pile only when it completes or extends a meld immediately — it is a free, visible card, but it also tells your opponents exactly what you are collecting. Otherwise draw blind from the stock to keep your hand harder to read.
How do I win more rounds?
Meld the moment you have a valid group instead of waiting for a "better" version of it, lay cards off onto any meld on the table (not just your own), and watch what opponents pick up from the discard pile so you avoid feeding their hand. Auto-meld sweeps up anything obvious the instant you draw.
Does the game save my progress?
Your best score, fewest moves, fastest win, games played, and win streak are saved locally in your browser for 2, 3, and 4-player tables separately. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. A round in progress is not saved if you close the tab.
Can I play Rummy on mobile?
Yes. The layout is built for touch: tap a card to select it, tap Meld or Discard, or tap a table meld to lay a card off. The whole table fits on one portrait screen, and dealing a new round is instant with no page reload.
