Getting started
What Rummy is, whether it is free, and how to start a round in your browser.
What is Rummy?
Rummy is a classic matching card game played with one standard 52-card deck. Players take turns drawing and discarding while trying to build melds — sets of matching ranks or runs of consecutive same-suit cards — and lay off single cards onto melds on the table. The first player to empty their hand wins the round.
Is Rummy free to play online?
Yes. rummycardgame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your stats are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.
Where does Rummy come from?
Rummy-family games — matching cards into sets and runs by drawing and discarding — are documented from the early 20th century, likely evolving from older Spanish and Mexican card games such as Conquian. Countless variants followed (Gin Rummy, Canasta, 500 Rum), all sharing the same core draw-meld-discard loop used here.
Rules and scoring
The deal, melds, drawing and discarding, laying off, and how points are counted.
How do you play Rummy?
Deal 10 cards each for two players or 7 cards each for three or four, with the rest as a face-down stock and one card turned up to start the discard pile. On your turn, draw one card from the stock or the discard pile, lay down any sets (three or four of a rank) or runs (three or more consecutive cards in a suit) your hand supports, lay single cards off onto any meld on the table, then discard one card to end your turn. Emptying your hand — by discarding your last card or by melding it all away — wins the round.
What counts as a meld in Rummy?
Two kinds of melds are legal: a set of three or four cards sharing a rank but in different suits (for example 7♠ 7♥ 7♦), and a run of three or more cards of the same suit in unbroken rank order (for example 4♦ 5♦ 6♦). Aces are always low, so Ace-2-3 is a valid run but Queen-King-Ace is not.
How does scoring work?
Melding a new group is worth 2 points per card and laying a single card off is worth 3, so your score climbs during play. Going out adds a 25-point bonus plus the deadwood in every remaining opponent hand — Aces count 1, number cards their face value, and Jacks, Queens, and Kings count 10 each.
What happens if the stock runs out?
The discard pile (all but its top card) is automatically reshuffled into a fresh stock, so play continues. On the rare occasion there is truly nothing left to reshuffle and nobody has gone out, the round ends in a stalemate with no winner.
What are the controls?
Tap or click a card to select it. Select three or more cards that form a valid meld and tap Meld, or select exactly one card and tap a highlighted meld on the table to lay it off. Double-tap a card to discard it directly. On the keyboard: Space draws the stock, D takes the discard, Enter melds or lays off, Backspace discards, S sorts, H hints, U undoes the turn, A auto-melds, N deals a new round, and M mutes.
What does auto-meld do?
Auto-meld scans your hand for every set or run it currently supports and every card that can legally lay off onto a table meld, and plays them all in one tap — a fast way to clear the obvious plays before you decide what to discard.
Can I undo a move?
Yes, but undo is scoped to your current turn: it resets your hand, the table, and your score back to how they stood the moment your turn began, undoing every draw, meld, and lay-off you made since. You cannot undo into a previous turn or into a bot's turn.
Winning and strategy
How to meld faster, what to hold, what to discard, and how to read the table.
Should I draw from the stock or the discard pile?
Take the discard pile only when it completes or extends a meld immediately — it is a free, visible card, but it also tells your opponents exactly what you are collecting. Otherwise draw blind from the stock to keep your hand harder to read.
How do I win more rounds?
Meld the moment you have a valid group instead of waiting for a "better" version of it, lay cards off onto any meld on the table (not just your own), and watch what opponents pick up from the discard pile so you avoid feeding their hand. Auto-meld sweeps up anything obvious the instant you draw.
How many players should I choose?
Two players (10 cards each) is the most forgiving table for learning, since fewer cards are locked away in opponents' hands. Three or four players (7 cards each) move faster and put more melds on the table sooner, which means more lay-off chances but also a shorter runway before someone goes out.
Why did the computer take the discard pile instead of the stock?
The bots only take the discard pile's top card when it immediately completes or extends one of their melds; otherwise they draw blind from the stock, the same rule of thumb recommended for the strategy tips on this site.
Devices, saving, and accounts
Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and how the bots work.
Does the game save my progress?
Your best score, fewest moves, fastest win, games played, and win streak are saved locally in your browser for 2, 3, and 4-player tables separately. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. A round in progress is not saved if you close the tab.
Can I play Rummy on mobile?
Yes. The layout is built for touch: tap a card to select it, tap Meld or Discard, or tap a table meld to lay a card off. The whole table fits on one portrait screen, and dealing a new round is instant with no page reload.
Can I play offline?
The game needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab playable without a network, but there is no dedicated offline app or installer.
How do I reset my stats?
Open Stats from the game menu and use Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears best score, fewest moves, fastest win, games played, and streaks for all three table sizes on this browser. It cannot be undone.
Which browsers are supported?
Any current browser with JavaScript: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If cards do not respond, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.
